When considering used car trailers for sale, there are a few aspects you will want to consider. One is whether you need a closed or open trailer. This is going to depend on whether or not you want your car exposed to the outside elements when pulling it. Often, when the vehicle you will be hauling is an older or classic car, the enclosed trailer will be the best choice.

Dual Axle or Single Axle?

Car trailers for sale will range from single or tandem axle trailers, but the car being hauled will be over 3,000 lbs, so a dual axle is the best choice. These types of trailers have two axles that are load bearing and have one of two types of suspension. The choices will be either a torsion bar that operates independently, or a leaf spring suspension.

One of the best reasons for purchasing the dual axle trailer is the types of road you will be driving. This type tracks more precisely than the single axle trailer, depending on the roads you will be traveling. So when considering used car trailers for sale, look for the dual axle trailer.

Access to the Car

A ramp rear door gives the best access. This will ensure that you have the easiest way of loading your car, as well as unloading. A spring assisted ramp is preferable, since many of the doors can be extremely heavy.

Since there may be other reasons for needing access to the car you are hauling, there are also trailers with side doors. This will make it easier on those who have to have the ramp for loading and unloading. But they may need to get to their car on occasion and do not want to put the ramp down, so this is very handy.

Brakes are Required by Most States

Most states require brakes on dual axle trailers. The braking system used by most people is electric, so how does this work? They are normally a system that connects the brakes on the trailer to the ones on the vehicle that is pulling the trailer. When using this type, you will need a control on the inside of your vehicle. When looking for used car trailers - if the braking is electric, make sure this control is included.

When you find car trailers for sale with a hydraulic brake system, there will be an actuating cylinder in the tongue of the trailer. When you apply the brakes in the car that is doing the towing, the trailer goes toward the car. This causes the surge actuator to compress, which in turn applies force to the master cylinder and on to the braking cylinders.

These are all important things to check when you are looking for used car trailers. If you do not check out the trailers, you may end up with something on which you have to pay for a lot of work, or you cannot use at all.
